Determine floor area from the model

DES-GFA · General · Design

Model storey volumes and air spaces and derive floor area from storey volume minus air space.

Starting point

  • Floor-area verification and metrics need traceable quantities per storey.
  • Manual deductions for atriums and voids are error-prone and hard to align with the model.

Goal & benefit

  • Maintain storey volumes and air spaces separately in the model.
  • Derive countable floor area and volume directly from storey volume − air space.

Process

  1. Provide storey volumes according to the modelling guideline.
  2. Model non-occupiable air spaces storey by storey.
  3. Evaluate floor area and volume from storey volume minus air space.

Outcome

  • Traceable floor area and volume per storey from the model - with air spaces deducted.

Deliverables

  • Architecture model with IfcProject, IfcSite, IfcBuilding, and IfcBuildingStorey
  • Storey volumes modelled as IfcSpace with PredefinedType=USERDEFINED and ObjectType=Bruttovolumen
  • Air spaces as IfcSpace with PredefinedType=USERDEFINED and ObjectType=Luftraum
  • GrossFloorArea, GrossVolume, and Height per storey volume and per air space
